Minimally Invasive Arthroscopic ACL Surgery

Anterior Cruciate Surgery (ACL) repairs are now quite routine. However, they remain one of the most complex surgeries that sports surgeons perform, with many steps that must me made correct every time. Please use this site to learn about the ACL, your injury, and the arthroscopic technique. Videos and animations are available for your perusal.

Dr. Khan has focused his practice on perfecting the most current techniques for ACL repair, laser shrinkage or reconstruction. He has treated patients both locally and nationally. Make an appointment today for a physician consultation if you have a knee injury or need ACL surgery.

What is Arthroscopic Surgery?

Arthroscopic surgery, in general, is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. It entails making small incisions in the skin into which instruments, including fiber optic cameras that project images of the joint onto a monitor, are inserted in order to complete the repair. The surgery is performed using portals instead of open incisions. While open surgery often results in unsightly scarring, one or more day stays in the hospital, longer rehabilitation time, and is associated with more risks and complications, arthroscopic surgery is just the opposite. Arthroscopy minimizes your risks, results in much less scarring, and you can have your injury repaired in an outpatient, same-day-surgery setting with shorter recovery times. The results of arthroscopic surgery can be much better than classical open surgery. This new technique has undergone a revolution over the past five to ten years, and many studies have proven the virtues of minimally invasive surgery. The benefits of arthroscopic surgery over classical open surgery are summarized here:

  • Shorter recovery times
  • Minimal scarring
  • Diagnosis can be more accurate than traditional surgery or X-ray studies
  • Generally easier on the patient
  • Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, and patients can be home on the same day
  • Patients can generally return to work and their regular daily activities earlier
